FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
CAN I USE A DIFFERENT GLAZE?
Yes, you can definitely use a different glaze!
If you want a zesty twist, try mixing powdered sugar with a little bit of lemon juice to make a tangy lemon glaze.
It’s the best thing to add a fresh flavor to your apple pie twists.
You could also drizzle some caramel or even chocolate sauce on top if you’re feeling adventurous.
Just make sure the twists are at room temperature before adding the glaze so it doesn’t run off.
CAN I USE A DIFFERENT PIE FILLING?
Absolutely! You can swap out the apple pie filling with other pie fillings like cherry, blueberry, or peach.
Using different fillings lets you enjoy new flavors without changing the recipe much.
Just be careful if the filling is too juicy; you might want to drain a little bit of the excess liquid to prevent soggy twists.

ANY ADDITIONS?
Oh gosh, there are so many ideas here. I’ve got just a short list to get you started. YUM!
- Grated Apple: Add some grated apple like Granny Smith apples to the filling for extra texture and dietary fiber.
- Brown Sugar: Sprinkle brown sugar on the filling side before twisting for added sweetness.
- Raisins or Dried Cranberries: Mix them into the apple mixture for a fruity surprise.
- Chopped Nuts: Add walnuts or pecans for a crunchy element and healthy fats.
- Cinnamon Sugar Dusting: After baking, dust with a mixture of cup sugar and a teaspoon of cinnamon for extra spice.
- Caramel Drizzle: Drizzle caramel sauce over the twists when they are warm but not hot.
- Apple Butter Spread: Spread apple butter on the dough before adding the filling for deeper apple flavor.
- Spices: Add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice to the filling for a more spicy apple twists experience.
- Vanilla Extract: Mix a little bit into the glaze for extra flavor.
- Powdered Sugar Dusting: Simply dust with powdered sugar instead of glaze for a lighter touch.
ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?
YES!! If you have any questions or comments, let me know down below!
- Homemade Pie Crust: Use homemade pie crust made with wheat flour if you prefer from-scratch baking.
- Puff Pastry or Crescent Roll Dough: Substitute pie crusts with puff pastry or crescent roll dough for a flakier texture.
- Non-Dairy Milk: Use non-dairy milk like almond or soy milk in the glaze to make it dairy-free.
- Coconut Sugar: Replace granulated sugar with coconut sugar for a natural sweetener.
- Egg Wash Alternative: Use melted butter or a cup of water mixed with a little bit of honey instead of egg wash.
- Spice Swap: Substitute cinnamon with pumpkin pie spice or add a pinch of cardamom for a different flavor profile.

HOW TO STORE:
- Room Temperature: Once they have cooled completely, place them in an air-tight container, or cover with plastic wrap. I think they’re just as good the next morning! They can be kept at room temperature for up to 2 days. This is perfect if you plan to enjoy them soon.
- Refrigerator: To keep them fresh a bit longer, store the twists in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Before eating, you can warm them up in the oven or microwave to get that freshly baked taste.
- Freezer: If you want to save some for later, these twists freeze well. Place them in a freezer-safe bag or container, separating layers with parchment paper to prevent sticking. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to enjoy them, let them thaw at room temperature or warm them in the oven.
DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Make sure your pie crust is defrosted per the directions on the packaging.
- This recipe can be frozen, see my notes above on how to do that.
- Double this recipe easily, bake some and freeze some for later use.
- Make sure your twists slightly cooled before glazing so it doesn’t melt all the way off.
- These are best served warm, but you can serve them cooled as well.
Try dipping these Apple Cinnamon Twists in Cinnamon Buttermilk Caramel Sauce, woah! Yummmmm! All that drippy glaze really sets them off!
