Quick Answer

How do you cook a hot pocket in an air fryer?

Preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees, place 1 frozen hot pocket top side up in the basket without cooking spray, cook for 13 to 15 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees, then let cool for 2 minutes before serving.

Why This Recipe Works

Click to see the technique science
  • Air fryer convection beats the microwave. Hot circulating air crisps the crust from all sides at once, the exact opposite of the microwave that steams the bread into a soggy disappointment.
  • 360 degrees is the sweet spot. Higher temperatures burn the outside before the filling thaws, lower temperatures take too long and dry out the dough. Three sixty hits the balance every time.
  • No cooking spray needed. The hot pocket crust releases from the basket on its own. Adding oil just smokes and adds calories without helping crispness.
  • Cook from frozen. Hot pockets are designed to cook from solid frozen. Thawing first means the bread goes mushy and the filling overheats before the crust crisps.
  • Two minute rest is the bite saver. Hot pockets straight out of the air fryer hit lava temperatures inside. Two minutes of rest lets the filling settle so the first bite is hot, not tongue-burning.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Sixteen minutes freezer to plate. No prep, no cleanup, just open the box and drop them in. Faster than driving through anywhere.
  • Crispy crust every time. The crust crisps up the way the box always promised but the microwave never delivered. The same crisp-or-die air fryer move we use for our frozen chicken patties in air fryer.
  • Kid approved after school snack. Old enough kids can do this on their own, low enough mess that it stays on the safe list.

Key Ingredients

  • Hot Pockets: Any flavor works. Pepperoni pizza is the gold standard at our house, but the ham and cheese and the meatballs and mozzarella both crisp up beautifully in the air fryer too. One pocket per serving.
  • Air fryer: Any basket style air fryer works. The basket style gives the best all-around crisp because the perforated bottom lets hot air circulate underneath, the same airflow advantage that makes our air fryer frozen corn dogs hit golden in 8 minutes.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Cook two at once. Lay two hot pockets in the basket with at least 1 inch between them and add 1 to 2 minutes to the cook time.
  • Add a dipping sauce. Marinara, ranch, or a quick warm homemade BBQ sauce dip turns the snack into a proper meal.
  • Try a Lean Pockets swap. Lean Pockets cook on the same 360 degree setting, shave 1 minute off the cook time because the dough is thinner.
  • Mini Hot Pockets in 8 minutes. Pizza Snack Bites or mini Hot Pockets cook at 360 for 7 to 8 minutes, shake the basket halfway.
  • Reheat day old slices. Use the same air fryer trick at 350 for 3 to 4 minutes to reheat leftover sheet pan pizza with crispy crust restored.

How to Make Hot Pocket Air Fryer

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees for 5 minutes so the basket is hot when the hot pockets go in.
  2. Place the hot pocket top side up in the air fryer basket without spray. If cooking two at once, leave at least 1 inch between them so the hot air can circulate.

  1. Cook for 13 to 15 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the internal temperature reads at least 165 degrees on an instant read thermometer. Two at a time lean toward 15 minutes.

  1. Let cool 2 minutes before biting so the molten cheese filling settles into something safely edible. Cut in half to show off the steam and cheese pull, then dig in.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

  • Skip the cooking spray. The hot pocket crust releases from the basket on its own. Spray just smokes and adds nothing.
  • Cook from frozen. Do not thaw the hot pocket first. Frozen straight from the box is what the bake time is built for.
  • Use a basket air fryer. Basket style gives even crisp on the bottom because air circulates underneath, just like our air fryer frozen corn dogs need.
  • Add 1 to 2 minutes for two pockets. Two hot pockets in the basket need a little extra time because the basket has more cold mass to overcome.
  • Check internal temp with a probe. 165 degrees is the safe number for the filling. An instant read thermometer in the side takes the guesswork out.
  • Rest 2 minutes before biting. The filling is lava hot straight out of the basket. Two minutes lets it settle to safely edible without losing crispness.
  • Try the sleeve trick if you must. Pop the cooked pocket into the cardboard crisping sleeve for the last minute if you want even more crust char.

They’re great in the air fryer. I have to set mine at 350° for 12 minutes after a 5 minute warm up. I brush them with butter before going in and sprinkle some garlic powder over them. Thank you for your idea’s.

Just to mention to spray with lite olive oil is to make a product crispy and not for a sticking problem.
I did not see a cooking temp suggestion.
Thanks so much for your page, I have learned and learning so much.
