WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With ingredients that are easy to find at your local grocer, you can whip this up quickly.
- You can use a premade sugar cookie dough instead of homemade.
- You can also use store-bought cream cheese frosting to make it more simple.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST FOR THE FULL RECIPE CARD):
- Unsalted butter
- Granulated sugar
- Egg
- Vanilla extract
- All-purpose flour
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Cream cheese
- Powdered sugar
- Blueberries
- Raspberries
HOW TO MAKE JULY 4TH FRUIT PIZZA:
- Start off by making the sugar cookie crust. In a medium bowl, add the butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla extract. Beat until well combined.
- Add in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until just combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and pop in the refrigerator. Chill the dough for 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, grease a 12-inch tart tin or pizza pan with butter or non-stick spray. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
- Remove the chilled dough from the refrigerator, drop it onto your tin or pan and use your hands or a spatula to spread it into an even layer. If using your hands, I recommend coating them in oil or non-stick spray to keep the dough from sticking.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool down to room temperature before moving onto the next step or the frosting will melt.
- Meanwhile, prepare the cream cheese frosting. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and fluffy.
- Spread 1/2 of the cream cheese frosting onto the sugar cookie crust and use a spatula to spread it all the way to the edges.
- Decorate with blueberries and raspberries: simply place the blueberries in a square in the left upper corner to create the blue portion of the flag, then use the raspberries to create seven stripes.
- Place the remaining cream cheese frosting into a piping back fitted with a closed star tip or your favorite tip and pipe on the white stripes.
- Slice and serve!
See how easy this recipe is?! You can’t go wrong with this one, it is super fun and super patriotic and the perfect party dessert to bring to your gatherings.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
DO I HAVE TO USE CREAM CHEESE FROSTING?
Absolutely not! You can use a plain buttercream if you like or even just whipped cream, if you do use whipped cream I recommend my Stabilized Whipped Cream recipe.
If you don’t want to pipe more frosting between the fruit you don’t have to, we do this to make it look more full and we love frosting so the more the better!
Also, if you do not want to make this into a flag design, you can use any fruit that you like! When we make a regular fruit pizza we like to use:
- Blueberries
- Kiwi
- Strawberries
- Bananas
- Pineapple
You can add any fruit to a Patriotic Fruit Pizza that you like, all fruits really go with the flavor so you can essentially mix any type and do any design that you like.
ANY ADDITIONS?
You better believe I’ve got some ideas here. Check these out!
- Banana slices: For a naturally sweet addition, perfect for creating fun patterns or concentric circles with the other fruits.
- Cool Whip: A lighter, fluffier alternative to cream cheese filling, adding just the right amount of sweetness without the extra cost.
- Cookie stars: Small sugar cookie stars placed on top of the white frosting can add a festive touch, making it one of your favorite 4th of July desserts.
- Fresh berries: Mix in other fresh berries like blackberries or slices of kiwi to introduce more colors and flavors to the fruit pizza crust.
- Chocolate chips: For a delightful surprise, sprinkle chocolate chips over the top of the pizza before serving.
- Nutella spread: A layer of Nutella under the cream cheese topping can make for an irresistible chocolate and fruit combination.
- Sliced almonds: To add a crunchy element and a nutty flavor that complements the fresh fruit and creamy base.
- Mint leaves: For garnishing, mint leaves can offer a fresh pop of color and a hint of flavor that pairs well with the fruit.
- Powdered sugar: A light dusting over the finished pizza for added sweetness and a snow-like appearance.
ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?
Let me know in the comments how this all goes for you. I love hearing from you!
- Whipped cream or buttercream frosting: These can be used in place of the cream cheese frosting for those who prefer a different base under the fruit. Whipped cream offers a lighter option, while buttercream brings a buttery richness.
- Strawberries: A classic choice for the red stripes, strawberries can easily substitute raspberries in this easy fruit pizza recipe, aligning with the summer holidays vibe.
- Tubes of sugar cookie dough: A quick and easy alternative for the sugar cookie base, saving time and effort, especially useful when preparing for a large Fourth of July fruit pizza.
- Store-bought frosting: For those in a hurry, using pre-made dough and frosting can simplify the process, allowing you to focus on decorating this beautiful dessert.
- Gluten-free flour: To make the sugar cookie fruit pizza accessible to everyone, gluten-free flour can be used for the crust.
- Greek yogurt mixed with powdered sugar: For a healthier twist on the cream cheese mixture, Greek yogurt can offer a tangy flavor that complements the fresh blueberries and other fruits perfectly, making it an ideal choice for a lighter Fourth of July fruit pizza.
HOW TO STORE:
This Fruit Pizza Recipe can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
The berries might stain the frosting while storing, this is completely normal.
I do not suggest freezing.
