Why This Recipe Works
Click to see the technique science
- Frozen layers hold their shape. Blending each layer with ice or frozen fruit makes them thick enough to stack without bleeding together.
- Spoon, do not pour. Gently spooning each layer over the back of a spoon keeps the red, white, and blue colors crisp and distinct.
- Cream of coconut makes the white pop. It gives the middle layer a bright, opaque white that separates the red and blue beautifully.
- Frozen strawberries do double duty. They color the top layer a vivid red and keep it frosty and thick.
- Blue curacao is the easy blue. A splash delivers that patriotic blue with a bright orange flavor, no food coloring needed.
