FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
CAN THIS BE MADE AHEAD OF TIME?
No, I do not recommend making this ahead of time. Since this is a frozen cocktail, it will melt, even if you place it in the fridge.
DO I HAVE TO ADD SALT TO THE RIM?
Absolutely not, I don’t always like salt with my margaritas.
Instead, I will use coarse sugar, super delicious and I always love an extra pop of sugar!
Or go totally crazy and dip the rim in pop rocks! Why not add an extra level of fun to your Fourth of July cookout – perfect for celebrating America’s birthday.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER GARNISHES I CAN USE?
There is an unlimited amount of garnishes to add, have fun with it! Here are some suggestions:
- Fresh mint or mint sprigs
- Fresh berries, especially strawberries to play off the red layer – fresh raspberries are good too!
- Lime wheel in place of a wedge or lime slices
- Other fresh fruit like pineapple
- Maraschino cherries
ARE THERE ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?
There are a few, here are some options:
- In place of frozen strawberries, you can use frozen raspberries
- Use lemon juice in place of lime juice
- Sour mix will work in place of lime juice as well
- Maple syrup can be used in place of agave syrup, but it will change the overall flavor. Simple syrup works too.
- If you don’t like tequila, use white rum or coconut rum
CAN THIS BE MADE INTO A MOCKTAIL?
Yes! Let the kiddos have fun too.
All you have to do is leave out the triple sec and blue curaçao entirely.
You can use tonic water, sparkling water, ginger beer, or lemon-lime soda instead of tequila. Or, you could even make blue and red Kool-Aid and use those in the blue and red layers.
Cranberry juice or fruit punch will work for the red layer as well.
An easy way for the whole family to enjoy this fun easy cocktail or mocktail.
HOW TO STORE:
Since this is a frozen cocktail, it needs to be served and enjoyed immediately.
There is no way to store leftovers. Even if placed in the fridge, it will end up melting and the colors will bleed together.
DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Be careful when adding the layered colors to the glass, you want there to be a separation so you can easily see each layer.
- Must be served immediately.
- Add coarse sugar or pop rocks to the rim instead of margarita salt.
- Tons of options for making this a mocktail.
