“BY FAR my favorite and most used recipe I have found on here! These are so simple and reheat so well; a LOVED meal in my house! Thank you so much for sharing the recipe” – Rachael

HOW TO MAKE FRENCH DIP SLIDERS:

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the onions and coat in the butter. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 12-15 minutes until the onions are soft and browned but not burnt.
  2. Add the thyme, salt, and pepper, stir to combine, take off the heat, and set aside.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Take the rolls out of the package, leaving the rolls intact. Take a large knife and slice the rolls across so you have the tops and bottom separated. Place the bottom, cut side up into an 11×7 baking dish.
  4. Top with half of the cheese. Add the roast beef. Top with the onions, spreading them out. Add the remaining cheese, then add the tops of the rolls on top.
  5. In a small bowl stir together the melted butter and onion soup mix. I like to brush this mixture on top of the rolls to make sure it’s evenly distributed but you can just pour the butter sauce on top.
  6. Cover loosely with foil, you want to make sure the foil is not touching the tops of the rolls and bake for 25 minutes. Take the foil off and bake an additional 5 minutes to brown the rolls.
  7. While the rolls are baking, prepare the au jus per the package directions with the water. Serve the rolls with an optional garnish of parsley and au jus on the side for dipping.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:

For these sliders you really can’t go wrong.

We use sliced deli roast beef for this recipe, but you can also use Mississippi pot roast, regular roast, or any leftover beef you have on hand.

I like to stick with a neutral white cheese with these, provolone is our cheese of choice.

Otherwise you can use mozzarella, both work great on these.

You will want to use the slides and not shredded for this recipe as well.

It just works better and makes these less messy than they already are.

We like to use King’s Hawaiian for this recipe as they are super convenient, but you can use any off brand or other brand of sweet rolls that you can find.

Sweet rolls are not necessary either, we just like the contrast in flavor, so you could also use any slider buns that are your favorite.

I’ve got you covered. Check it out!

  • Sprinkle sesame seeds on the tops of the buns for extra crunch.
  • Layer on some melty swiss cheese along with the provolone if you like extra cheesy sliders.
  • Spread a little cream cheese on the bottom half of the rolls to add a tangy twist.
  • Top your sliders with french-fried onions for a fun crunch and a nod to classic french onion soup flavors.
  • Drizzle Worcestershire sauce over the roast beef slices before adding the cheese for even more savory goodness.
  • Stir in a spoonful of horseradish sauce to the au jus sauce if you like a spicy kick.
  • Add a layer of sautéed peppers or mushrooms for a veggie boost.
  • Swap part of the provolone cheese for pepper jack if you’re in the mood for a little heat.
  • Serve with a side of french fries for a full meal that’s easier than a big roast dinner.
  • Use leftover pot roast instead of deli roast beef for a heartier filling, this makes a delicious slider out of leftovers.

Yes indeed! You know I’ve always got options for you.

  • Hawaiian sweet rolls for standard sweet rolls if you can’t find your favorite brand (they’re also the perfect size).
  • Leftover pot roast instead of store-bought roast beef—just shred or slice it thinly first.
  • Melty provolone can be swapped for mozzarella if that’s what you have on hand (still super gooey).
  • Olive oil in place of butter for brushing on top of the sliders, if you prefer a lighter option.
  • Beef broth mixed with au jus seasoning mix in a small saucepan instead of water for a richer dipping sauce.
  • French onion soup packet instead of the dried onion soup mix if that’s in your pantry—gives a slightly sweeter onion flavor.

If you happen to have leftovers, these can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where they will last for up to 3 days.

These can also be frozen, let cool completely and then place in a freezer container where they will keep for up to 3 months.

Let defrost in the refrigerator and reheat in the oven while tenting them in a pan until they are heated through.

DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • Dried herbs can be used in place of fresh, just cut the amount in half.
  • You can use any slider buns you’d like but sweet rolls are our favorite.
  • Provolone and mozzarella are our cheeses of choice for this recipe.
  • The au jus is optional, but just ads that much more flavor when consuming.
  • These can be frozen, see my tips above.

Fantastic! This was a great, inexpensive, crowd pleaser at the firehouse. I substituted the cheese for a smoked Gouda and Gruyere blend, and it was absolutely phenomenal. Will be using this again!

I Cut the butter in Half for the topping – Glad I did .. they were plenty buttery

Can these be assembled the night before?

Great recipe will definitely cook again!

  12. I made a few adjustments to the recipe this evening to better suit my tastes. First, I marinated finely sliced onions and mushrooms in low-sodium Dale’s Sauce before sautéing them in 3T butter until they were soft. I split the buns and spread a thin layer of Boar’s Head Horseradish Sauce on the top and bottom buns. I layered the cheese and topped it with the layer of roast beef. I spread the layer of sautéed mushrooms and onions on top of the beef and then added the remainder of the cheese. I added the top of the buns and then lightly brushed melted butter across them. For my au jus, I warmed up a can of Progressive French Onion Soup. I feel like the sodium in Lipton’s French Onion Soup Mix and the au jus powder is too much. This method is much more flavorful.

They were a crowd pleaser. I didn’t do the au jus and added peppercinni peppers in with the onions. So good

  14. Delicious and easy to prepare
