I’m a sucker for Pizza Hut, it has always been one of my favorite pizza restaurants since I was a kid. We don’t really have one by us anymore so what does one do?

One makes one of their favorite menu items at home and that is these incredible Pizza Hut Cheese Sticks. They are literally spot on in my opinion and we just cannot get enough.

We make these so often, I always love a bread to have with a meal, and when we have the time we love to make these because they are so flavorful and cheesy.

Now you do work with yeast on this recipe but trust me, it is not hard at all. Usually, you would have to let it rise, but with this recipe, we don’t so that is what I REALLY love.

You don’t have to wait around for an hour or so for the dough to rise and then do a second rise, you can literally enjoy these Pizza Hut Cheesy Breadsticks in about an hour!

So if you love a good copycat recipe and Pizza Hut, these cheese sticks are just what you are looking for to go with your next meal.

Some of my other favorite bread recipes that we have on our site include: Cheesecake Factory Brown Bread, Cheesy Stuffed Breadsticks and Twisted Chorizo Breadsticks.

HOW TO MAKE PIZZA HUT CHEESE STICKS:

  1. In a small bowl add the yeast, set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, add the thinly sliced butter, sugar, and salt, set aside.
  3. Warm the water to 110°F in the microwave or in a small saucepan. Pour half of the water into the bowl with the yeast, stir gently, let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  4. Pour the remaining water into the bowl with the butter. Let it sit while the yeast is sitting.
  5. After 5 minutes, whisk the butter mixture until combined, the butter may not fully melt, that’s okay.
  6. Add the egg yolk and yeast mixture to the wet ingredients, whisk to combine.
  7. Add the flour and stir it all together until just combined.
  8. From the assembly ingredients, add 2 tablespoons of the melted butter to a 9×13 baking dish and brush it all over the dish.
  9. Spread the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  10. Preheat the oven to 350F. Take off the plastic wrap from the baking dish. Pour the rest of the melted butter on top and brush it all over the dough so it is covered.
  11. Sprinkle the mozzarella all over the top, followed by the parmesan, garlic salt, and dried oregano.
  12. Bake for 28-31 minutes until the edges all around the baking dish are dark golden brown and the cheese on top is bubbly and browned.
  13. Take the pan out of the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes. Take the breadsticks out of the pan and cut into 8 even slices. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

HOW WARM SHOULD MY WATER BE?

Since we are using active dry yeast we want to make sure that we proof it, or make sure that it is alive and activate it. So you do not want your water to be too hot where it will kill it or too cold where it won’t activate it.

We like to have our water around 110 degrees F, that seems to be the perfect temperature that will activate your yeast. You can check the temperature with a kitchen thermometer.

WHAT OTHER CHEESE CAN I USE?

If you are not a fan of the basic mozzarella and parmesan cheese you can absolutely change it up! We do it all the time just to have different flavors.

Some ideas that we really like include: Pepper Jack, Sharp Cheddar, White Cheddar, Fontina, Gruyere, Smoked Gouda, and Provolone.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DIP THIS IN?

While the gold standard is always marinara, in my opinion, there are so many other dipping sauces that will work for this and we love switching them up on occasion.

Some others that you can try include: cheese sauce, garlic butter, Ranch, roasted red bell pepper sauce, etc. Even our creamy beer cheese dip, WOW!

HOW TO STORE:

These Pizza Hut Cheese Sticks can be stored covered with plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

They can also be frozen, placed in a freezer bag they will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.

To defrost, remove to the refrigerator overnight. To reheat you can do this in the oven, I suggest wrapping them in nonstick foil or spray a piece of foil with cooking spray and then add the breadsticks. Wrap it up in a little package and heat them that way, or else they may dry out during the reheating process.

You can also microwave them for a few seconds until you reach your desired temperature.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • The dough only needs 15 mins of rest time!
  • You can use other cheeses, see my tips above.
  • Other dipping sauces can also be used, again see above.
  • If you are not an oregano fan you can absolutely leave that off.
  • You can use refrigerated pizza dough, but the outcome will not taste the same.
  • These can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
  • Want to add some heat, sprinkle about 1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes on top.
