When it comes to a quick and easy side or treat, these Cracker Barrel Fried Apples are a tasty and fun recipe. Minimal ingredients help this come together in no time.
I’m a huge Cracker Barrel fan, it is one of those restaurants that just brings comfort food in all shapes and forms. But sometimes I don’t like having to drive to get it.
One of my favorite things I never pass up when I go there is the Fried Apples. So we started making our own at home, so now you can have the famous Cracker Barrel Fried Apples at the comforts of your own table.
These are super easy to throw together, with minimal ingredients that you most likely already have on hand. That is what I love about these, so easy and tasty.
When it comes to that combination, you know that it will be made a lot in our house, and it is. We love to use these apples not only for a snack or dessert but over things as well.
They are just so delicious that you can eat them any way that you see fit. If you are looking for a delish way to use up some fall apples, you have to make my Cracker Barrel Fried Apple recipe.
Some of my other favorite apple recipes that we have on our site include: Apple Fritters, Apple Cinnamon Twists and Banana Apple Oat Muffins.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Minimal ingredients help this come together easily.
- You can double this batch to have more on hand to serve more people or save for later.
- This is super versatile and can be used for many things.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE BELOW):
Salted butter
Granulated sugar
Light brown sugar
Ground cinnamon
Golden Delicious apples
Apple juice
Cornstarch
HOW TO MAKE CRACKER BARREL FRIED APPLES:
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the butter, sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Stir constantly until the butter and sugars are melted.
- Add the apples and coat them in the mixture. Place a lid on the pan and bring it to a simmer. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until tender-crisp. Gently stir every few minutes to not break up the apples.
- In a bowl mix together the apple juice and the cornstarch.
- Slowly stream this into the simmering apples, stirring constantly.
- Cook for one minute until thickened and serve immediately.
DO I HAVE TO PEEL MY APPLES?
A lot of Fried Apple recipes do keep the skin on their apples as it gets tender when it cooks. You can choose to keep the skin on if you’d like, but to have a real copycat recipe, they need to be peeled.
WHAT OTHER APPLES CAN I USE?
While Golden Delicious is our staple apple, other apples can be used in its place! Some of our other favorites include:
- Honeycrisp
- Braeburn
- Gala
- Fuji
CAN I ADD A LITTLE MORE SPICE TO THIS?
If you want a more spice/aromatic flavor to your apples, you can also add ground nutmeg, ground clove, and ground allspice. You will want to test the flavors as you add the spices to know how much you will want to add.
HOW TO STORE:
These can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container where they will keep for up to 5 days.
They can also be frozen, place cooled apples in a freezer bag or container, and they will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
To defrost, remove from the freezer to the refrigerator overnight until thawed. You can reheat it in the microwave until heated through.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- These can be served as is or over some cakes, breakfast foods, etc.
- Other apples can be used, see above for some of my suggestions.
- If you want a more depth of flavor, you can replace the light brown sugar with dark, or just use all light brown sugar in the recipe.
- These apples are tender but not mushy.
- The cornstarch slurry helps thicken everything up, do not skip that step.
