FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:

Yep! It’s a perfect make-ahead dessert.

Pop it in the fridge for at least 6 hours—or overnight if you can wait that long.

It gets even better as it chills. An Oreo dirt dessert!

Totally! Swap the French vanilla pudding mixture for instant chocolate pudding or even white chocolate pudding.

Any flavor works as long as it’s instant pudding mix.

I’ve got some other ideas for swaps down below.

Want to pile on the fun? Try these mix-ins or toppings:

  • Gummy worms (duh, it’s dirt!)
  • Whipped topping for extra fluff
  • Oreo cookie crumbs sprinkled on top
  • Chocolate syrup drizzle
  • Crushed sandwich cookies for more crunch
  • A few mini Oreos standing up like rocks
  • Sprinkles for a birthday party vibe
  • Chopped nuts for a surprise bite
  • A layer of cookies in the middle
  • Candy rocks for silly decoration

I know sometimes you just gotta change things up. Here are a few ideas to get you started!

  • Use Cool Whip instead of heavy cream for a quick whipped topping swap.
  • Try instant vanilla pudding mix instead of French vanilla for a classic dirt cake feel.
  • Swap whole milk with cups of milk (2% works fine!).
  • Use a rolling pin to crush Oreos in a plastic bag if you don’t have a food processor.
  • Replace cream cheese with sour cream for a tangy twist (use less, though!).
  • Swap salted butter with melted butter (unsalted) and add a pinch of salt.

Refrigerator
Cover it with plastic wrap or put it in an airtight container.

It’ll stay yummy in the fridge for up to 4 days—if you don’t eat it all first!

Freezer
You can freeze it in a trifle bowl or individual cups for up to a month.

Let it thaw in the fridge before digging in, and maybe add fresh whipped cream to perk it up.

DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • Chill Your Bowl – Stick your large mixing bowl in the fridge before whipping cream—it goes faster!
  • Crumb Control – Pulse Oreos to fine crumbs and bigger bits for that classic dirt pudding texture.
  • Soft Cheese – Let cream cheese sit out a bit so it whips smooth, not lumpy.
  • Layer Evenly – Spread the pudding layer and Oreo crumbs flat for pretty slices.
  • Hide the Worms – Bury some gummy worms in the middle for a funny surprise.
  • Taste Test – Sneak a spoonful of the cream cheese mixture—it’s too good to skip!
