Dirt cake is the no bake dessert that looks like a muddy flower pot and tastes like the inside of an Oreo, layers of creamy vanilla pudding and crushed cookies with gummi worms poking out the top. I made my first one for a second grade class party and Lizzie was more excited about burying the gummi worms than eating it. If you already love my easy dirt cups, this is the big, spoon straight from the middle version of that same treat.

No oven, no fuss, just layers of pudding and cookies chilled until creamy.

Why This Recipe Works
Click to see the technique science
- Cream cheese makes the pudding taste like cheesecake. Beating softened cream cheese into the pudding gives the creamy layer a rich, slightly tangy depth so it tastes like more than just a box of instant pudding.
- French vanilla pudding is the secret. French vanilla has a warmer, custardy flavor than plain vanilla, which is what makes homemade dirt cake taste better than the version you remember from childhood.
- Crushing the Oreos two ways gives the best texture. Half large crumbs and half fine crumbs means you get both that classic dirt look and little pockets of cookie crunch in every spoonful.
- A splash of melted butter holds the crumbs together. Tossing the crushed Oreos with a little melted butter keeps the cookie layers from turning to dust and gives them a fudgy, packed texture.
- It is built to be made ahead. Dirt cake actually gets better as it sits, so the overnight chill that lets it set is the same step that deepens the flavor, making it the perfect do it the day before dessert.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- It is the ultimate crowd pleaser, kids and adults both go back for seconds and the gummi worms make everyone smile.
- Everything happens in a few bowls with no oven, so it is a lifesaver for hot days and busy party weeks.
- It is the no bake, make ahead cousin of my lemon blueberry trifle, another layered dessert that looks fancy for almost no effort.
Key Ingredients

A short pantry and dairy aisle list, and most of it you probably already have.
- Oreos: The dirt. A party size package gives you enough for thick cookie layers plus crumbs for the top, and any Oreo flavor works if you want to play around.
- Instant French vanilla pudding: The creamy base. French vanilla tastes richer than plain, but regular vanilla or even white chocolate pudding works in a pinch.
- Cream cheese: The upgrade. Softened and beaten smooth, it turns the pudding layer into something closer to a no bake cheesecake.
- Heavy cream: Whipped to stiff peaks and folded in, it keeps the pudding layer light and airy instead of dense.
- Gummi worms: The fun. They are optional but they are the whole reason this is called dirt cake, so do not skip them for a party.

Variations and Substitutions
One classic dessert, plenty of easy ways to make it your own.
- Make it in a clear trifle dish so everyone can see the layers, or spoon it into individual cups for a party.
- Swap the regular Oreos for Golden, Mint, or Peanut Butter Oreos to change the whole flavor with one ingredient.
- Add a layer of sliced bananas or fresh strawberries between the pudding and cookies for a fruity twist.
- Skip the Oreos and swap in a graham layer and you drift toward my no bake cheesecake, a completely different but just as easy chilled dessert.
- Turn it spooky for Halloween with extra gummi worms, a few candy pumpkins, and crushed cookies mounded like fresh dirt.
How to Make Dirt Cake

- Whip the heavy cream with half of the powdered sugar and the vanilla to stiff peaks, then set it in the fridge until you need it.

- Whisk the cold milk and both pudding mixes together for about two minutes until smooth and starting to thicken.

- Beat the cream cheese smooth, mix in the pudding a little at a time, then fold in the whipped cream until no streaks remain.

- Pulse the Oreos into a mix of large and fine crumbs, then stir in the melted butter until everything is coated.

- Spoon a layer of the pudding mixture into a trifle dish, then top with a layer of the buttery cookie crumbs.

- Repeat the layers until everything is used, cover, and chill at least 6 hours or overnight before topping with gummi worms.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- Use full fat cream cheese and pudding. Low fat versions can turn the creamy layer thin and loose instead of thick and set.
- Soften the cream cheese first. Cold cream cheese leaves lumps, so let it sit out until room temperature before beating.
- Chill overnight if you can. Six hours is the minimum, but a full overnight rest gives you the cleanest layers and the deepest flavor.
- Add the gummi worms right before serving. They can get sticky and bleed color if they sit in the fridge too long, so top just before it hits the table.
- Crush the Oreos in two batches. One batch to big crumbs and one to fine crumbs gives that real dirt look with the best texture.
- Do not skip the melted butter. It binds the crumbs so the cookie layers stay put instead of scattering when you scoop.

Dirt Cake FAQs
Dirt cake is a no bake dessert made of crushed Oreos layered with a creamy filling of instant vanilla pudding, cream cheese, and whipped cream. The crushed cookies look like dirt, and gummi worms are added on top to complete the look. There is no actual cake or baking involved.
It is called dirt cake because the crushed chocolate Oreos on top look just like a pile of dark, crumbly dirt. Add a few gummi worms poking out and the whole thing looks like a patch of garden soil, which is exactly the playful effect that makes it a kid party favorite.
Yes, dirt cake is actually better made ahead. It needs at least 6 hours in the fridge to set, and making it a full day in advance gives the cleanest layers and the richest flavor. Just wait to add the gummi worms until right before serving so they stay fresh.
Covered tightly, dirt cake keeps for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator. The Oreos soften over time into a cakey texture, which many people love, but past about four days the layers start to get too soft and the pudding can weep.
Absolutely. French vanilla gives the richest flavor, but regular vanilla, white chocolate, or even cheesecake pudding all work beautifully. For a double chocolate dirt cake, use chocolate pudding, though the classic version leans on vanilla so the Oreos are the star.
You can leave it out for a lighter, more classic dirt cake, but the cream cheese is what gives this version its rich, almost cheesecake like flavor. If you skip it, just beat the pudding and fold in the whipped cream, and add a little extra whipped topping to keep the texture creamy.
