When I was a kid, every time Mom pulled out the large skillet I knew good things were coming.
We’re talking about a green bean stir fry recipe, here.

She’d toss in fresh green beans, crank the burner to medium-high heat, and let those beans sizzle until they popped like tiny fireworks.
This green bean stir fry recipe was always a favorite.
I’d steal a few bites before dinner and get a “save some for the rest of the family!” lecture.
Ha! Fast-forward a couple of decades, and I’m still that same kid, just taller and with my own stove.
Today’s green bean stir fry recipe is my grown-up twist on that childhood favorite.
We keep the beans bright and crunchy, add a little chili garlic sauce for a little kick, and finish with a sweet-savory glaze of soy sauce and honey.
The whole dish takes about ten minutes of cooking time, so it’s perfect for weeknights when you’re starving and your take-out app is staring you down.
Plus, this stir fry is a flavor sponge.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Blanch First, Stir-Fry Fast
A quick dip in cold water after blanching keeps the beans bright green and lets you finish the stir fry in 1–2 minutes. No mushy veggies here. - Sweet + Savory Glaze
Soy sauce, honey, and a dab of chili garlic sauce coat every bean, adding tons of flavor with less oil than most stir fries. - Flexible Flavor
The base is simple, so you can swap in snap peas, string beans, or add extras like oyster sauce, rice vinegar, or a drizzle of little sesame oil for even more taste.

- Add the green beans and toss until warmed through.
- Serve immediately with the rest of the green part of the scallions as garnish.

FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
Can I use frozen green beans?
Yes. Thaw first, pat dry, and skip the blanching.
They’re already par-cooked. Just stir fry a bit longer to evaporate extra moisture.
Do I have to do the blanching step?
Blanching gives the beans that restaurant-style bright color and tender-crisp bite.
If you’re in a rush, you can stir fry raw beans.
Just cook them over medium heat for a few extra minutes and add a bit of water so they steam.
Can this be made ahead?
The beans taste best right off the stove, but leftovers keep in an airtight container in the fridge for two days.
Reheat in a large pot or skillet over medium-low heat with a splash of water.

Any Additions?
This is one of those super easy recipes to add things to. Take a look!
- Red pepper flakes for more spice
- Drizzle of dark soy sauce for deeper color
- Toasted sesame seeds on top
- Julienned bell pepper or carrots
- Handful of snap peas or snow peas
- Crumbled bacon (hey, why not?)
- Thin-sliced pork shoulder pieces
- A splash of rice vinegar for tang
- Cashews or peanuts for crunch
- Scrambled egg ribbons tossed in at the end
Any Substitutions?
I’ve always got a thing or two up my sleeve. Try it out and let me know how it goes!
- Olive oil, peanut oil, or avocado oil for vegetable oil
- Tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce
- Maple syrup in place of honey
- Ground ginger powder if you don’t have fresh
- Black bean sauce instead of chili garlic sauce
- Frozen stir-fry veggies mix instead of fresh green beans
HOW TO STORE:
ROOM TEMPERATURE
Not recommended. Move leftovers to the fridge within two hours.
REFRIGERATOR
Store in an airtight container up to 2 days. Reheat gently over medium heat with a splash of water.
FREEZER
You can freeze for up to 1 month, but beans may lose some crunch.
Thaw overnight and reheat in a large skillet.
DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Use a wide pan so the beans sit in a single layer—they sear instead of steam.
- Pre-mix the soy, honey, and chili sauce in a small bowl for quick pouring.
- Keep heat medium-high so the glaze thickens fast without burning.
- Add a bit of sesame oil at the very end for aroma—heat kills its flavor.
- If using string beans, cook 1–2 minutes longer; they’re thicker than regular green beans.
- Sprinkle a dash of white pepper for classic Chinese takeout vibes.
