If you’ve ever had a salty dog, you know it’s equal parts refreshing and zesty. The tangy tartness of the grapefruit pairs perfectly with a hint of salt.

This creates a sweet and salty balance that makes you wonder why every drink isn’t served with a salted rim. Boom! Salty dog!
This recipe is a twist on the classic greyhound cocktail, only you add a salt rim for that extra pop of flavor. It might sound fancy, but trust me—this is a simple cocktail anyone can make at home.
I remember the first time I tried a Salty Dog cocktail. No, I wasn’t at a beachside bar (I wish!) My neighbors had us over for a party.
I was feeling brave and decided to try one of the drinks they made. They actually had a highball glass with a salted rim! Fancy! After one sip, I was hooked!
There’s something about the blend of good gin, tangy juice, and that coarse salt that screams “happy hour.”
Ever since then, I’ve been making this at home. It’s a great choice for a special occasion like Mother’s Day, a casual get-together with friends, or just to celebrate finishing a busy day at work.
If you’d like an alternative to your typical classic margarita, or you’re in the mood for something new, give this Salty Dog a try. It just might become your favorite summer drink!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
DO I HAVE TO USE A SALT RIM?
Nope! You can skip the coarse salt on the rim of the glass if you’re not a fan of salty flavors.
Some people even switch things up by rimming their glass with sugar instead.
That said, the salted rim is what makes this drink a “Salty Dog,” so I highly recommend at least trying it once.
WHAT KIND OF SALT IS THE BEST TO USE?
You’ll want to stick with something like margarita salt, kosher salt, or another type of coarse salt.
Fine salt can be overwhelming and too salty.
Coarse salt adds just the right crunch and gives you that true salty dog cocktail vibe.

ANY ADDITIONS?
This cocktail can be changed up in all kinds of ways. Let me know how it goes!
- Simple syrup if you want to sweeten up the drink a bit.
- A squeeze of lime juice or lemon juice for extra tanginess.
- A splash of club soda or ginger beer to give it some fizz.
- A few drops of bitters for a more complex flavor.
- Muddle a few mint leaves at the bottom of the glass for a fresh twist.
- A dash of chili powder on the salted rim for a spicy surprise.
- Use an herb sprig (like rosemary or thyme) as a stir stick for fun aromatics.
- Add a drop or two of simple cocktail flavor syrups, like lavender or elderflower.
- Top it off with a bit of orange juice if you like a citrus blend.
- Float a thin slice of cucumber for a cooling finish.
ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?
If you want to swap out a thing or two, go ahead. I won’t tell anyone!
- Vodka in place of gin if you prefer a simpler, less herbal taste.
- Sugar rim instead of salt, making it more sweet than salty.
- Pre-bottled grapefruit juice if fresh grapefruit isn’t available—though fresh always tastes better.
- Low-sodium salt if you’re watching your salt intake.
- Flavored gin, like cucumber or citrus gin, for a new spin on the flavor profile.
- Non-alcoholic “spirit” brands if you want the taste without the booze.

HOW TO STORE:
Refrigerator
If you mix up a batch of Grapefruit Salty Dog (minus the salted rim, which is best done right before serving), you can keep it in a sealed container in the fridge for about 24 hours.
The flavors might settle, so give it a quick stir or shake before pouring.
Freezer
It’s not common to freeze this cocktail, but you could make “boozy popsicles” if you’re feeling adventurous.
Pour the mixture into popsicle molds (again, skip the salted rim!) and freeze until solid.
Just be sure to label them so nobody mistakes them for regular popsicles!
DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Choose a Good Gin: A mid-range or premium ingredient gin will really shine here. Cheaper gin can be harsh, and since this is a simple cocktail, the gin flavor matters.
- Adjust the Sweetness: If you find this too sour, stir in a tiny bit of simple syrup. If it’s too sweet, add a dash of lime juice for balance.
- Use a Highball Glass: It’s the classic cocktail style for our recipe. Plus, you have plenty of room for ice and garnish.
- Make It a Mocktail: Swap the gin for sparkling water or club soda if you’re avoiding alcohol. You still get that sweet and salty zest, just minus the booze.
- Be Creative: This recipe is easy to tweak. From adding different juices to playing with garnish, experiment until it’s your favorite way to enjoy.

A Salty Dog is the perfect mix of tart, sweet, and salty.
Cheers to tasty sips and even better company!
