Hi everyone, it’s the last week of the spring desserts series so I really wanted to leave it with a bang! I think these flowerpot cupcakes MIGHT be the cutest dessert I’ve ever seen… I don’t know it’s a close call! I’ve seen different versions of these floating around the internets and just had to make one myself!

They are very easy, fun and would be a great activity to decorate with kids! Wouldn’t they just get a kick out of “planting” the flowers after sprinkling dirt on their cupcakes?! I know I would have loved that!

So, to make these I just used a boxed devil’s food cake because it’s the darkest color there is to mimic dirt and well… because it’s freaking delicious. Topped with my chocolate malt buttercream frosting (I TOLD you I had plans for that recipe!) and just sprinkled with Oreos that were turned into crumbs in a food processor.

I picked up the paper flowers off a shop I found on etsy. You can literally find everything on there and it’s always so cute!

Ingredients

  • 1 devil's food cake mix
  • 1 1/4 Cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 recipe chocolate malt buttercream frosting
  • 10 Oreo pulverized into crumbs
  • Paper flowers on toothpicks or any other decoration you desire

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix cake mix, water, oil and 3 eggs in a large bowl with hand mixer on low speed for 30 seconds. Turn it on to medium speed a mix well for 2 minutes.
  • Pour into terracotta pots that are set out onto a sheet tray. Make sure pots are washed thoroughly and dried completely. Pour in batter 1/2 of the way to 2/3 of the way up, do not over fill!
  • Bake for 19 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Place the sheet tray on a wired rack and let cool completely. After cooled, trim off any excess cake that flowed over the top if that happened to you.
  • Make the frosting and place a heaping tablespoon on top and smooth out with a knife. Add a sprinkle of the Oreo crumbs. Decorate as you wish, serve with a spoon and enjoy!

I got the smallest terracotta pots I could find at the craft store. Make sure they are safe to use for baking and are not glazed. Wash them thoroughly before hand and use after they have dried completely.

I accidentally filled mine a little too much so I had to scrap off some of the excess cake before frosting. No worries, they still came out super cute and the frosting covers up any mistakes!

These would be so cute to surprise your kid’s class with and then after they finish eating them, they can plant a little plant themselves!

I bought some clay pots in Joanne’s craft store in the artificial plant section. As long as I wash these are they the correct ones to use?
Can’t wait to try them they look great!

I can’t find terra cotta pots that dont have the hole at the bottom. Any suggestions on places that might have them?

I’m not sure, the ones I used in this recipe did have the hole. They didn’t leak too much as you can see in the photos.

How did you prep the pots? Grease and flour? Grease only?

I didn’t use anything on the post before hand. You have to eat the cakes with a spoon, they will stick no matter what!

Epic fail. The cake wouldn’t get done, kept testing and toothpick was still wet. Finally took them out after about double the time. Put the pan on a cooling rack, and they then all fell with the exception of 1. They were puffed up and beautiful when I removed them from the oven, but again all fell about half way down,. I tested one with a spoon and still very undone half way down. So that was a waste of time and money. ARGHHHH
