Picture this: a delicious beef frank wrapped in soft pretzel dough, looking just like a cute little mummy. Now add some candy eyes, and voila, you’ve got Mummy Pretzel Dogs!

What’s great about this recipe is how it combines two classic favorites. You get the juicy hot dogs nestled in soft pretzel dough, transforming into a fun treat that brings a smile to everyone’s face.

Not only are they super cute, but these mummy pretzel dogs are also bursting with flavor. The pretzel dough adds a slightly crispy outer layer to the hot dog, making every bite tastier than the last.

Lily made a little game out of these. She had so much fun helping me make these easy pretzel dogs. I don’t know what she liked more, wrapping the delicious hot dogs or biting their heads off when they were done. Ha!

If you’ve never made a pretzel dog recipe before, don’t worry. I’ve got a super simple recipe for you—no need for homemade pretzel dough. We’re going to use pizza crust dough! Simple and easy is the only way to go here.

These little guys will get devoured at any get-together you bring them to. Tell everyone you’re bringing your famous pretzel dog! No hot dog buns are needed, haha! If you have some extra dough, you could make some easy homemade soft pretzels too!

I like to add a little butter flavor to my pretzel dogs. You only need to brush them with melted butter right after they come out of the oven. You’re going to love this recipe! Now, let’s dig into the details!

HOW TO MAKE PRETZEL DOGS:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, set aside.
  2. Roll out the pizza dough, and lay it out on a lightly floured surface. Cut off the uneven ends to make two even ends on both sides. Divide the pizza crust into 8 equal pieces, width-wise. We did this by dividing in half, half again, and half again.
  3. Take the strips of crust dough, and wrap one piece around each hot dog to create the mummy.
  4. Once all 8 hotdogs are wrapped with a little dough rope, boil 4 quarts of water in a large pot.
  5. Once the water is boiling, slowly add the baking soda. The water will bubble up as you add it.
  6. Drop the dough-wrapped hot dogs into the boiling water and boil for about 5 seconds, until they float. Then remove them with a slotted spoon. You will need to do this in batches, so you don’t crowd the pot.
  7. Place pretzel dog onto the prepared sheet tray.

  1. Once all of the hot dogs have floated and been placed, bake in the oven for about 15 minutes, until golden brown.
  2. Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter if using.
  3. To attach the candy eyeballs, dab a bit of mustard onto the backs and place them onto the dogs. It can be helpful to tuck them into a piece of dough. Serve immediately with ketchup and mustard for dipping.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:

CAN I ADD PRETZEL SALT?

Absolutely!

Sprinkling pretzel or kosher salt on top before baking will add an extra salty kick. Be advised that hot dogs are already salty, so add additional salt to taste.

WHAT KIND OF HOT DOGS SHOULD I USE?

Any kind will do, but bun-length hot dogs work best for this recipe.

CAN I USE HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH?

Definitely, if you have more time and prefer homemade dough, feel free to use it.

WHAT TO DIP THESE IN?

Mustard and ketchup are classic choices but feel free to get creative.

Cheese sauce or ranch, for example, could be a delicious alternative.

ANY ADDITIONS?

Yeppers! Check these out!

  • Sesame seeds or poppy seeds sprinkled on top for extra crunch.
  • A cheese slice inside for a cheesy surprise!
  • A sprinkle of garlic powder or Italian seasoning for an herby touch.
  • Bacon wrapped around the hot dog before you wrap the dough for a smoky flavor.
  • Insert pretzel sticks into the ends to make arms.
  • Cut the dogs in half and make some mini pretzel dogs!
  • Add a slice of pickle along with the hot dog for a tangy surprise.
  • Don’t forget the dipping sauce.

ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?

I’ve got a few ideas. Let me know what you think.

  • Turkey or chicken hot dogs for a lighter version.

  • Use tofu dogs or veggie dogs for a vegetarian version.
  • Whole wheat pizza dough for a healthier spin.

HOW TO STORE:

Refrigerator: Place the cooled pretzel dogs in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.

Freezer: Wrap each pretzel dog in plastic wrap, then place them in a freezer bag. They’ll keep for up to 3 months.

Reheat thawed pretzel dogs in a toaster oven or air fryer for the best results.

DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • Make sure your pizza dough is at room temperature for easy handling.
  • When boiling the pretzel dogs, don’t overcrowd the pot. Boil a few at a time.
  • Add the candy eyeballs after the pretzel dogs have cooled slightly to prevent them from melting.
  • Don’t skip the baking soda bath. It’s what gives the pretzel dogs their classic texture.
  • For a golden brown finish, you can brush the dogs with an egg wash before baking.
  • Serve warm for the best taste and texture.
