FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
WHAT KIND OF BEER SHOULD I USE?
For this recipe, we like to use a lager, but this will work with any beer.
You do not have to go out searching for a certain beer for this.
Any that you have at home will work fine.
We just choose a lager as we really like the flavor that it brings to this dip, this is what we have always used but have also tried with other beers and they work just fine.
WHAT KIND OF CHEESE SHOULD I USE?
We really like the mixture of the sharp cheddar and gouda.
We also like to use freshly shredded cheese off the block as it melts better since it doesn’t have the preservatives as the bagged cheese.
You CAN use your favorite mixture of cheese but make sure that it has a strong flavor or it will get lost in the sauce mixture itself and you won’t be able to taste it.
You can use all cheddar or all gouda, but we like to mix this. I
f you want a stringier dip then you can use mozzarella instead of the gouda.

ANY ADDITIONS?
I think you’re going to love some of these ideas!
- Worcestershire Sauce: Stir in a splash of Worcestershire sauce for extra depth and great flavor in your beer cheese recipe.
- Cayenne Pepper: Increase the cayenne pepper to add more heat, making it a spicy cheesy snack perfect for game day.
- Bacon Bits: Mix crispy bacon bits into the dip for a savory twist that complements the taste of beer.
- Green Onions: Sprinkle chopped green onions on top for a pop of color and freshness.
- Jalapeños: Add diced jalapeños for an extra kick in your creamy dip.
- Soft Pretzel Bites: Serve with soft pretzel bites or pretzel sticks for dipping—it’s a great way to enjoy this warm dip.
- Apple Slices: Offer apple slices as dippers; the sweet and crisp apples contrast nicely with the sharp cheese flavor.
- Tortilla Chips: Pair the dip with tortilla chips or potato chips for a crunchy option.
- Mustard Drizzle: Drizzle some extra Dijon mustard on top for added tanginess.
- Chives: Garnish with fresh chives to enhance the presentation and flavor.
ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?
Let me know in the comments how these turn out for you!
- Type of Beer: Use your favorite kind of beer—whether it’s a pale ale, wheat beer, or even a non-alcoholic beer—to customize the taste of beer in the dip.
- Cheese Varieties: Substitute gouda with Monterey Jack cheese or use all sharp cheddar for a different cheesy dip experience.
- Milk Alternatives: Replace whole milk with heavy cream for a richer dip or use apple cider for a unique flavor twist.
- Flour Options: Use cornstarch or potato starch instead of all-purpose flour to adjust the thickness.
- Pre-Shredded Cheese: If you’re short on time, pre-shredded cheese can be used, but note that a block of cheese shredded at home melts better and gives the best results.
- Spice Level: If you prefer less heat, omit the cayenne pepper for a milder dip that’s still full of great flavor.
HOW TO STORE:
This Beer Cheese Dip Recipe can be stored in the refrigerator covered for up to 3-4 days.
To reheat you can either place it in the microwave stirring to melt the cheese or on the stove.
I do not suggest freezing.
DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use any beer of your choice, I prefer a lager but use any kind you like to drink already.
- If you do not want to use beer, substitute an equal amount of milk for a classic cheese sauce.
- This recipe makes about 3 cups, you can halve this or double it depending on how many people you are serving.
- You can serve this on or with any of your favorite dipping items such as pretzels, on brats, nachos, etc.
- I highly suggest using sharp cheddar cheese here or any strong-flavored melting cheese because the flavor can otherwise get lost in the cream sauce.
