Why This Recipe Works
Click to see the technique science
- No oven required. Everything melts together in the microwave, so these come together fast and there is no baking involved.
- Sweet meets salty. Crunchy pretzels coated in chocolate and peanut butter give you that irresistible salty-sweet combination in every bite.
- Only five ingredients. Chocolate, peanut butter, butter, pretzels, and candy eggs are all you need for an adorable treat.
- They are made for decorating. Pressing a well and adding mini eggs is the perfect easy job for little hands at Easter.
- They set up on their own. Just let the nests rest at room temperature and the chocolate firms right up, no chilling skills needed.
- They make a big, shareable batch. One batch yields two dozen nests, perfect for class parties, Easter baskets, and dessert tables.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- They are an adorable, festive no-bake treat that takes just minutes to make.
- The salty pretzels with sweet chocolate and peanut butter are completely addictive.
- They are a fun Easter project for kids, just like decorating our Easter bunny cookies.
Key Ingredients

Here is everything you need for these no-bake bird nests. Just five simple ingredients you can find at any grocery store.
- Pretzel Sticks: they give the nests their crunchy, salty base and that twiggy, nest-like look when broken up.
- Milk Chocolate Chips: the sweet coating that holds everything together; semi-sweet works too if you prefer.
- Creamy Peanut Butter: adds richness and that classic chocolate-peanut-butter flavor.
- Butter: just a little helps the coating melt smooth and glossy.
- Candy Mini Eggs: the speckled chocolate eggs that make them look like real nests, like the candy toppers on our Easter cookie bars.
See recipe card for exact quantities.
Variations and Substitutions
These bird nests are easy to customize for any taste or occasion.
- Use chow mein noodles: swap the pretzels for crunchy chow mein noodles for an even more nest-like look.
- Try different chocolate: semi-sweet, dark, or white chocolate chips all work beautifully.
- Add coconut: sprinkle a little toasted coconut over the tops for a grassy, nest-like finish.
- Switch the candy: use jelly beans, malted eggs, or jelly-bird-egg candies instead of chocolate mini eggs.
- Make them year-round: skip the eggs and just make sweet-and-salty pretzel clusters, like our chocolate covered peanut butter pretzels.
How to Make Bird Nests

- Place the milk chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until melted and smooth.
- Add the pretzel sticks to the chocolate mixture, breaking them up into smaller pieces as you stir, until they are fully coated.
- On a baking sheet lined with wax or parchment paper, scoop out small mounds of the pretzel mixture, spacing them apart.
- Press a small well into the center of each mound to form a nest, then tuck a few candy mini eggs into each one.
- Let the nests sit at room temperature for at least an hour to set up and harden, then serve and enjoy.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- Melt the chocolate gently in short bursts and stir often so it stays smooth and never scorches.
- Break the pretzels as you stir so they distribute evenly and the nests hold together.
- Work quickly once mixed, since the chocolate begins to set as it cools.
- Press the wells deep enough to hold the candy eggs so they nestle in and stay put.
- Add the eggs right away while the chocolate is still soft so they stick, like decorating our Easter cookie bars.
- Let them set at room temperature; rushing them in the fridge can cause the chocolate to bloom and look dull.
Serving Ideas and Suggestions
Bird Nests are the perfect bite-sized treat for any spring celebration, arranged on a pretty platter as the centerpiece of your Easter dessert table.
They are wonderful tucked into Easter baskets, sent in as a no-bake class-party treat, or set out next to other festive sweets like our candied grapes and a colorful layered berry trifle.
For a full sweet-and-salty snack spread, serve them alongside our chocolate covered peanut butter pretzels and a bowl of white chocolate Chex mix so there is a little something for everyone.

Bird Nests FAQs
Yes, chow mein noodles are a classic choice and give the nests an even more realistic, twiggy look. Just swap them in for the pretzels in the same amount and stir until fully coated.
At room temperature they firm up in about an hour. If you are in a hurry you can pop them in the fridge for 15 to 20 minutes, though setting them slowly at room temperature keeps the chocolate shiniest.
Store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the fridge if your kitchen is warm. Place parchment between layers so they do not stick together.
Yes. Freeze them in a single layer until solid, then transfer to an airtight container for up to two months. Let them come to room temperature before serving so the candy eggs do not sweat.
Speckled chocolate mini eggs like Cadbury Mini Eggs are the classic choice, but malted milk eggs, jelly bird eggs, or robins-egg candies all look adorable nestled inside.
If they crumble, the chocolate may have set before shaping, or there may be too many pretzels for the coating. Gently rewarm the mixture for a few seconds and make sure every pretzel piece is well coated before scooping.

Bird Nests (Chocolate Peanut Butter Pretzels)
Ingredients
- 1/2 pound pretzel sticks
- 2 Cups milk chocolate chips
- 1 Cup creamy peanut butter
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- Mini eggs
Instructions
- Place the chocolate, peanut butter and butter in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second intrevals, stirring between each set. You should only need to microwave it twice, three times at the most. It is ready when it is totally smooth after stirring.
- Place the pretzels in the mixture, while adding them to the chocolate mix, break them up into smaller pieces with hands. Mix together until pretzels are coated.
- On a baking sheet lined with wax or parchment paper, scoop out a little bit of the pretzel mix. Using the spoon or your finger form it into a tight nest and make sure there is a small crater in the middle to hold at least one egg.
- Place mini eggs in crater. When finished making nests, let sit for at least an hour to let harden up. You can then store them in the fridge if you like a more set chocolate or hold in an air tight container on the counter.
- Serve and enjoy!
