“Made these today, and they are so delicious!!” – Amanda
I remember one morning when I had a bunch of overripe bananas giving me the sad eye. They were too mushy for eating but perfect for baking.
I thought, “Why make banana bread again when I can try something new?” There’s nothing like hunger to generate some baking inspiration, haha!
Jeremy and Lily were sooooo excited, and the donuts disappeared faster than you can say “banana!” Pretty sure Lily ate like 4 of them…

- Dip doughnut tops into the glaze. Place back on the wire rack, glaze side up.
- Top with chocolate chips, serve, and enjoy!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
CAN I USE A DIFFERENT GLAZE?
Yes, you can! If peanut butter isn’t your thing, you can try a chocolate glaze made with melted chocolate chips and a bit of butter.
Simply melt dark chocolate over medium heat in a small saucepan and dip the tops of the donuts.
A maple glaze made with pure maple syrup and powdered sugar is also delicious.
For a simple option, dip the tops of the donuts in cinnamon sugar or drizzle with cream cheese frosting.
The best way is to choose a glaze that you love!
CAN THESE BE MADE AHEAD?
Absolutely! You can make the donuts ahead and store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days.
If you want them to last longer, keep them in the refrigerator.
Just wait to add the glaze until you’re ready to serve them.
This helps keep the donuts fresh and prevents the glaze from getting too sticky.

ANY ADDITIONS?
I’m thinking chocolate chips would be perfect in these things.
Oh man, my mouth is watering…
- Chocolate chips: Mix into the batter for extra sweetness.
- Chopped nuts: Add walnuts or pecans for a crunchy texture.
- Cinnamon: Sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the glaze.
- Coconut flakes: Top the donuts for a tropical twist.
- Sprinkles: Add colorful sprinkles for fun.
- Nutella drizzle: Drizzle over the donuts for chocolate lovers.
- Fresh banana slices: Place on top before serving.
- Oats: Mix into the batter for heartier donuts.
- Honey: Drizzle over the glaze for natural sweetness.
- Dried fruits: Like raisins or cranberries mixed into the batter.
ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?
Let me know in the comments if you have any other great ideas. I love hearing from you!
- Vegetable oil: Use coconut oil or olive oil for a different flavor.
- All-purpose flour: Substitute with whole wheat flour, almond flour, or oat flour for healthier donuts.
- Granulated sugar: Use brown sugar, light brown sugar, or coconut sugar.
- Egg: Replace with a flax egg or applesauce for a vegan option.
- Peanut butter: Swap with almond butter, sunflower seed butter, or skip it for a simple powdered sugar glaze.
- Mini chocolate chips: Use dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or skip them if you prefer.

HOW TO STORE:
Refrigerator: Place the donuts in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to five days.
When you’re ready to eat, warm them slightly in the microwave or let them come to room temperature for that fresh-baked taste.
Freezer: You can freeze these donuts (without glaze) for up to three months.
Wrap each donut individually in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag.
Thaw at room temperature and add the glaze before serving. This is a great way to have a sweet treat ready whenever you want!
DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Don’t Overmix the Batter: Mix until just combined to keep the donuts fluffy. Overmixing can make them dense.
- Use Overripe Bananas: They add more sweetness and moisture to the donut batter.
- Grease the Donut Pan Well: Use cooking spray or melted butter to prevent sticking. Even non-stick pans benefit from this.
- Fill the Donut Pan Properly: Fill each donut mold about 2/3 full to avoid overflow. A piping bag or large ziplock bag makes this easy.
- Use the Right Flour: All-purpose flour works great, but you can experiment with whole wheat flour or almond flour for different textures.
- Cool Before Glazing: Let the donuts cool completely on a wire rack so the glaze sets nicely and doesn’t melt off.

Enjoy these delightful Banana Donuts!
They’re easy to make and a great alternative to fried donuts.
