Why This Recipe Works
Click to see the technique science
- Boxed shortcuts save time. A boxed cake mix and instant pudding give you a from scratch look without the fuss, perfect for a busy holiday.
- Layers stay distinct in a clear bowl. A glass trifle bowl shows off every red, white, and blue layer, so the dessert does the decorating for you.
- Pudding keeps the cake moist. Spreading pudding between the cake layers soaks in just enough to keep every bite soft and creamy.
- Fresh berries balance the sweetness. Juicy strawberries and blueberries cut the richness of the cake and cream with a bright, fresh pop.
- It is a make ahead dream. The trifle actually tastes better after a few hours in the fridge, so you can build it early and relax.

Key Ingredients

Here is what makes this 4th of July Trifle work, and why each layer matters.
- White cake mix: a quick, fluffy base that soaks up the pudding beautifully, baked in a 9×13 pan.
- Instant vanilla pudding: whisked with cold milk, it sets into a creamy layer that holds the trifle together.
- Strawberries and blueberries: fresh berries give the red and blue color and a juicy, fresh bite.
- Whipped topping: light and airy, it makes the white layers and the canvas for your flag design.
- Whole milk: use cold milk so the pudding sets thick and fast, the same trick we use in our easy Oreo dirt cake.

Variations and Substitutions
This 4th of July Trifle is easy to adapt.
- Swap in angel food cake or pound cake instead of boxed cake mix for a different texture.
- Use raspberries and blackberries in place of, or alongside, the strawberries and blueberries.
- Make a homemade whipped cream instead of cool whip if you prefer, like the topping on our strawberry angel food cake.
- Add a little lemon zest or almond extract to the pudding for a brighter flavor.
How to Make 4th of July Trifle

- Bake the cake. Mix the white cake mix with water, oil, and egg whites, pour into a 9×13 pan, and bake at 350 degrees F for 29 to 34 minutes, then cool completely.

- Make the pudding. Whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix with cold whole milk for two minutes until thick, then set it aside.

- Layer the cake. Cut the cooled cake into 1 to 2 inch cubes and add about 5 cups to the bottom of a trifle bowl.

- Add pudding and berries. Spread half the pudding over the cake, top with sliced strawberries, then smooth on a layer of whipped topping.

- Repeat the layers. Add more cake cubes, the rest of the pudding, and a layer of blueberries.

- Decorate and chill. Smooth the remaining whipped topping on top, arrange berries into a flag pattern, and serve or chill until ready.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
- Cool the cake completely. Warm cake makes the pudding and whipped topping melt and slide.
- Use cold milk for the pudding. It sets faster and thicker, which keeps the layers neat.
- Pat the berries dry. Drying sliced strawberries keeps the layers from getting watery.
- Use a clear trifle bowl. The whole point is showing off those red, white, and blue layers.
- Build it a few hours ahead. The trifle holds beautifully and the flavors meld in the fridge.
- Save your prettiest berries for the top. Arrange them last for a crisp flag design.
