Never heard of a fried green beans recipe before? Well, these are beer-battered, golden-brown delights that are so good, you’ll want to eat them all in one go. And guess what? They’re super easy to make, too!
Jeremy and I love this awesome little spot in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia. They have the most amazing BBQ there, and one of my favorite things they make is their fried green beans. We have even had them at Chinese restaurants!
Well, I decided to create my own version, and, dare I say, they’re even better than the original! These are perfect as an afternoon snack or as a side dish that everyone will rave about at dinner time.
The beer batter in this recipe packs a great flavor. Don’t be surprised if the batter is a bit thin. It’s supposed to be that way. It will be similar to a tempura batter!
The recipe calls for a ranch dipping sauce, but don’t think you need to stop there. Other yummy dipping sauces might be chipotle sauce, honey mustard, wasabi ranch, or sweet chili sauce. The list goes on!
Oh man, writing about this makes me want to go and make them right now. Keep in mind, there is no need to parboil the beans before frying them. The time in the fryer cooks them to perfection.
So let’s do this! Get out your fryer, and we’ll get right into this tasty Fried Green Beans Recipe!

- All-purpose flour
- Granulated sugar
- Baking powder
- Kosher salt
- Large egg

- Cooking oil for deep frying
- Optional: ranch for dipping
HOW TO MAKE FRIED GREEN BEANS RECIPE:
- Preheat your deep fryer or heavy bottom skillet with 4 inches of cooking oil to 375°F.
- Place the green beans in a large bowl and toss with the cornstarch. This will help the batter stick to the green beans.
- Make the batter by whisking together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
- Add the beer and beaten egg, and whisk it in until smooth.
- Add the green beans to the bowl with the batter, shaking off any excess cornstarch. Coat the green beans in the batter.
- Add the green beans to the hot oil one at a time, and let the excess batter drip off first. If using a deep fryer, shake the basket as you add them, so they don’t stick together. Stir well if using a skillet to make sure they are separated. You will need to fry in batches so as not to overcrowd the fryer or skillet.
- Fry for 4-5 minutes until golden brown. Stir occasionally so they brown evenly on all sides.
- Take the green beans out of the oil and drain them on a paper-towel-lined plate.
- Place them on a wire rack over a sheet tray and immediately sprinkle with more salt.
- Continue frying the remaining green beans and serve immediately with ranch for dipping.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
WHAT KIND OF BEER IS BEST TO USE?
A cold lager beer works best. It doesn’t overpower the batter and keeps things light and crispy.
Crispy green beans are the best!
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can certainly try out other kinds. Just avoid dark, strong-flavored beers like stouts and porters.
WHAT CAN I USE IN PLACE OF BEER?
No worries if you’re not a fan of beer! You can use seltzer water or even plain cold water.
The bubbles in the seltzer water and beer are the secret to that puffy fried texture that you get in the best restaurants!
WHAT TO SERVE THESE WITH?
Oh, the possibilities are endless! Personally, I’m a huge fan of serving these with BBQ like ribs or wings.
You can also serve them with burgers or even as a fancy snack for game days.
And if you’re into dipping, ranch is a classic, but feel free to use your favorite dipping sauces. Our Spicy Sriracha Mayo Sauce Recipe pairs perfectly as well.

HOW TO STORE:
Refrigerator: Store these crispy green bean fries in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Keep in mind that crispy fried green beans will become soggy when stored.

DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:

- Shake Off Excess Batter: This helps keep them crispy, not soggy.
- Drain on Paper Towel: Place your freshly fried beans on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
