INGREDIENTS NEEDED (SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST FOR THE FULL RECIPE CARD):
- Pizza crust dough
- Pack of bun length hot dogs
- Candy eyeballs
- Baking soda
- Water
- Mustard
- Ketchup
HOW TO MAKE PRETZEL DOGS:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, set aside.
- Roll out the pizza dough, and lay it out on a lightly floured surface. Cut off the uneven ends to make two even ends on both sides. Divide the pizza crust into 8 equal pieces, width-wise. We did this by dividing in half, half again, and half again.
- Take the strips of crust dough, and wrap one piece around each hot dog to create the mummy.
- Once all 8 hotdogs are wrapped with a little dough rope, boil 4 quarts of water in a large pot.
- Once the water is boiling, slowly add the baking soda. The water will bubble up as you add it.
- Drop the dough-wrapped hot dogs into the boiling water and boil for about 5 seconds, until they float. Then remove them with a slotted spoon. You will need to do this in batches, so you don’t crowd the pot.
- Place pretzel dog onto the prepared sheet tray.
- Once all of the hot dogs have floated and been placed, bake in the oven for about 15 minutes, until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter if using.
- To attach the candy eyeballs, dab a bit of mustard onto the backs and place them onto the dogs. It can be helpful to tuck them into a piece of dough. Serve immediately with ketchup and mustard for dipping.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
CAN I ADD PRETZEL SALT?
Absolutely!
Sprinkling pretzel or kosher salt on top before baking will add an extra salty kick. Be advised that hot dogs are already salty, so add additional salt to taste.
WHAT KIND OF HOT DOGS SHOULD I USE?
Any kind will do, but bun-length hot dogs work best for this recipe.
CAN I USE HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH?
Definitely, if you have more time and prefer homemade dough, feel free to use it.
WHAT TO DIP THESE IN?
Mustard and ketchup are classic choices but feel free to get creative.
Cheese sauce or ranch, for example, could be a delicious alternative.
