If you’ve ever been to a state fair, you know the magic of deep-fried treats. And if you haven’t tried our bite-sized Deep Fried Twinkie yet, you’re in for some real fun!

A deep fried twinkie is a golden brown delight! They have warm, creamy filling on the inside and are covered with a dusting of powdered sugar.
They’re the perfect bite-sized snack that combines the joy of classic carnival food with the comfort of a well-loved snack cake.
One of my favorite things about these Deep-Fried Twinkies is how quick and easy they are to make.
It’s a simple batter, and the hot oil transforms the golden sponge cake into a masterpiece in minutes. Plus, you don’t have to wait for the fair to come to town to enjoy them!
You can whip up a batch of this cream-filled snack right in your kitchen, bringing the fun and flavors of the carnival home.
Jeremy always sneaks an extra one or two while we’re frying them, and Lily can never wait to dig in. Most especially when there’s a dusting of powdered sugar on top!
A Deep Fried Twinkie in bite-sized form is perfect for family gatherings, parties, or anytime you’re craving a sweet treat with a little nostalgia.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Simple Ingredients: The batter uses basic pantry staples like flour, sugar, and milk.
- Perfect Golden Brown: Frying at the right temperature ensures each bite is golden brown on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
- Carnival Fun at Home: You don’t need to wait for the fair; these treats bring the fair experience right to your kitchen.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST FOR THE FULL RECIPE CARD):
- Twinkies
- Eggs
- Granulated sugar
- Milk
- Flour
- Salt
- Baking powder
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
- Powdered sugar (optional for topping)

HOW TO MAKE DEEP FRIED TWINKIE:
- Unwrap the Twinkies and place them on a plate. Put the plate in the freezer for about 10 minutes or while you are mixing the batter. (This will help ensure the filling doesn’t leak out when frying.)
- Place three inches of vegetable oil in a heavy-bottom skillet with deep sides. Heat over medium heat until hot, around 375°F.
- Beat the eggs and sugar together until smooth.
- Carefully whisk in the milk.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients except for the powdered sugar and beat this until smooth with no lumps.
- Take the Twinkies out and cut them into four equal pieces. You will want to fry these in batches, so only put as many Twinkie pieces in the batter as you will use.
- Place the other cut-up Twinkies back into the freezer until they are ready to fry.
- Cover the Twinkie bites in the batter and CAREFULLY place them, one by one, in the hot oil. Make sure to flip them every once in a while so they get a golden outside evenly. It takes about 3-5 minutes, and they are done.
- Transfer the deep fried Twinkies to a paper towel-lined plate so the excess oil is absorbed.
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce or a light coating of powdered sugar. Enjoy!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS RECIPE:
HOW TO REHEAT?
To satisfy your sweet tooth the next day, place these Deep Fried Twinkie Bites on a baking sheet and warm them in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 5 minutes.
This method helps them retain their crispiness without getting soggy.
I’d also consider using the air fryer basket.
Avoid using the microwave, as it can make them too soft and less enjoyable.
WHAT TO SERVE THESE WITH?
These bites pair perfectly with a variety of dipping sauces like berry sauce, chocolate sauce, or caramel sauce.
If you’re looking for something lighter, a sprinkle of powdered sugar can be just right.
You can also try them with a side of fresh fruit for a refreshing contrast to the sweetness.

ANY ADDITIONS?
From the outer coating to the filling, there are plenty of options here. I’m imagining a delicious vanilla cream!
- Chocolate chips in the batter
- A dusting of cinnamon sugar
- A drizzle of caramel sauce
- A scoop of vanilla ice cream
- A side of berry sauce
- Sprinkles for a colorful touch
- A dash of pumpkin spice
- A sprinkle of crushed nuts
- Whipped cream for extra indulgence
- Inject some banana cream for a little extra fun
- Banana slices for a fruity twist
ANY SUBSTITUTIONS?
Feel free to use a different flour mixture. One very popular way I’ve seen is to use coconut flakes! These are better than anything on the store shelves for sure.
- Use buttermilk instead of regular milk for a tangy flavor
- Gluten-free flour blend in place of all-purpose flour
- Coconut oil for frying instead of vegetable oil
- Substitute powdered sugar with cinnamon sugar for topping
- Almond or oat milk instead of cow’s milk

HOW TO STORE:
Refrigerator: Store leftover bites in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
To reheat, pop them in the oven at 350°F for a few minutes until they’re warm and crispy again.
Freezer: If you’d like to freeze them, lay the bites on a baking sheet to freeze first, then transfer them to a freezer bag or airtight container.
They’ll keep well for up to 3 months. When ready to eat, reheat them in the oven straight from the freezer.
DANA’S TIPS AND TRICKS:
- Oil Temperature: Make sure the oil is at 375°F for the best results.
- Freezing the Twinkies: Freezing helps the Twinkies hold together during frying.
- Batter Consistency: The batter should be thick enough to coat the Twinkie bites completely.
- Working in Batches: Fry in small batches to maintain oil temperature.
- Draining Excess Oil: Place fried bites on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Serving Fresh: Serve them hot for the best texture and flavor.

A Deep Fried Twinkie brings the fun of the carnival right into your home with each sweet, golden, and crispy bite.
They’re the perfect dessert for family gatherings or anytime you want a fun, nostalgic treat. Enjoy!
