I am happy to announce that this post for my DIY Patriotic Fabric Wreath is participating in the Sugar Bee Crafts Red, White and Blue craft post series! Make sure to visit Sugar Bee Crafts blog for the rest of the amazing projects!
Okay, I know it’s ANOTHER wreath… but I just couldn’t help myself. I’ve had this idea in my head for a while and am so happy I was finally able to make it happen! It took a little thought and some elbow grease from my Hubby to help me get the form for the wreath made but once that was done I was good to go with the rest of it!
Ingredients
Wire Mesh Found in the gardening section at hardware store, in a roll
Fabric Red Gingham (1 yard), Dark Denim (1/2 yard), Off white with red stars (1 foot)
Twine
Patriotic Star
Wire Cutter
Fabric Scissors
Ruler
Directions
Cut mesh with wire cutters at 24 inches. Bend wire so it will lay as flat as possible.
Next, taking another wreath I made we cut out the mesh into a circle. If you don’t have a form to go by just measure it 16 inches across in the middle of the mesh and cut it into a circle.
This is why I mentioned it is a dangerous craft. The edges of the metal mesh once cut can be pretty sharp so be careful!! Now you’re ready to cut the fabric. You will need all of the gingham. So measure it out into long strips of 5 inches. Then cut the strips into 1/2 – 3/4 inch pieces. They should look like this:
Now, you are just going to loop the fabric pieces onto the different piece of metal on the metal mesh. To make the loop you take the piece of fabric, fold it in half length wise, tuck the part you folded over under the metal bar and back over and tuck in the loose ends, pulling it through. You don’t need to loop every single bar but enough so it looks full. You are going to do this with the red gingham until 2/3 of the wreath is covered. Now, on to the trickier part, the denim and the star fabric. Mine turned out to be a teenie bit of a fail but you can’t tell that in the pics because I fixed it. I am going to tell you what to do so you won’t have to go back over it like I did. When cutting the denim fabric cut it into 6 inch long sections and then into the individual strips 1/2- 3/4 of an inch just like the gingham. You have to do this because the denim is much thicker and you will need the extra inch to compensate. Trust me. The fabric with the stars cut it like you did the gingham. Now, you are just going to loop this fabric as well. I did it so one row would be all denim and the next row would be a denim piece, then a fabric piece and repeat. Like this:
Then, just continue with this allll the way around! Now you are going to want to secure your star and add a piece of twine so you can hang it on a wreath hanger. Make sure when placing the hanger part that it will hang like the flag. The blue part at the top left. Here is what the back looks like:
